What should be on the first page of a website? The first page is also known as a home page. I’m going to run through what you should include in a website for a service based business, so stick around if that’s you.
You can watch the video or read the blog post, both contain the same information.
The concept of this home page structure can be used for all businesses but I specialise in service based businesses. So if that’s you, I would definitely pay attention. I’m not as clued up on e-commerce sites so I just want to make sure that you know that.
Your home page is an overview of what your business is about. So that if someone lands on your site and they’re brand new they can see what your website is about. If it’s of interest to them, they can make a decision quickly. They can decide if they’re going to stick around or if they’re going to leave.
We don’t have very long to catch anyone’s attention. Because of that you want to catch their attention fast.
The first thing is you want to include is a statement that lets that person know what transformation you’re going to provide them. Focus on what’s in it for them. It’s NOT about you, it’s all about what’s in it for that person.
As well as focusing on a transformation that they will get, you want to include a link to a freebie. Which means you increate your chances to get that person on to your email list.
Placing the button right at the top of your page makes it so it’s easy for them to notice. It helps you to build your email list even if they don’t stay on your website for very long. The transformation statement lets them know they are a right fit for what it is that you do which helps them decide if they need the freebie.
Including a statement about who it is you help is so powerful when that same person lands on your site.
You want to state that “I help such and such with such”. This helps that person self-select and they know instantly if your website and your services are for them.
Next up you want to share a testimonial. Everyone likes a bit of social proof to check that you’re the real deal. How do they know you’re not someone who’s just out to make a quick buck and trying to scam them? They don’t, so it’s up to you to prove to them that you are trustworthy.
Testimonials are great sprinkled throughout your website.
Pull out a snippet or summary about you. This isn’t going to be long, it’s just going to be a few sentences so people can get to know you briefly. Again you’re summarising a little part of your business. That’s what your homepage is for. It’s for pulling out things from different parts of your site just so people get a picture of what it is that you do.
You want to share a summary of your services. Whether you offer one, two or three services. You want to have a section with a brief intro to each of those services. Obviously you will link to those pages from your home page so that people can then get to those easily if that’s something that they’re interested in using.
Lastly you want a statement that invites a call to action. Whether that action is to sign up for your freebie, to book a call with you to find out more or whether it’s to book your services directly. Whatever your main focus call to action is, you want to invite that.
At the end of your home page you would have your footer. This is where you will have various links that you want to link to on your site.
I personally like to have the link to my freebie in the footer. This means that from the button at the top (where I mentioned you want the freebie button right at the top) you want to link to that freebie in your footer so that people are getting to it easily.
The great thing is, if your freebie form is in your footer people will see it throughout your website. Which means there are more chances for people to sign up and get on your email list.
If you need help remembering what should be on the first page of a website, I have created a free website content checklist that you can grab. It includes what should go on your homepage along with every other page of your website. The link to sign up is right below here.
I also design website templates using the platform Showit. The templates follow this structure and include all the pages that you need for your service business website. If you want to skip straight to that and just buy a template and get on with offering your services then you can check those out as well.
