During lockdown we have been truly appreciating our garden. We planted a buddleia about 5 years ago on my mum’s recommendation. She said butterflies love it and she wasn’t wrong. It has been covered in butterflies all month.
We have had some unseasonably warm weather for September in Scotland and have been loving sitting out in the garden and watching the butterflies.
I wondered why butterflies are so attracted to Buddleia so I looked it up. They love the very specific nectar composition that is found in Buddleia.
So what does this have to do with how to get clients as a freelancer?
A number of things have to be in alignment for your potential client before they are ready to buy from you. Your ideal clients are butterflies and you need to create the perfect nectar for them to come fluttering over to you. The main things to consider to create your butterfly client attracting buddleia are:
If someone doesn’t buy from you right now, it doesn’t mean they won’t buy from you in the future. Think of your own behaviour, do you buy from someone right away, the first time you clap eyes on them?
It’s up to you to make sure that you provide ways for your ideal clients to enter your world at all stages of the client journey. That includes brand new visitors who are interested but don’t know you well enough to buy from you yet.
If you invite them into your world at the start, they will be with you when the time comes and they are ready to buy.
When you offer a service, it’s all too easy to focus on what that service is, rather than thinking about what problem your service solves.
Let’s take personal brand photography as an example. I don’t want photos of me sitting at my laptop with a cup of tea in my hand. I don’t particularly like looking at photos of myself. What I do need is content for my website and social media that helps me to connect with my ideal clients and build trust.
Once you are clear on the problems you are solving, you can start to educate your ideal clients on how you can help them solve that problem.
Investing in a service can be a big deal for a lot of people and so your ideal clients want to make sure that they are investing in someone they trust. The best way to build trust is through consistent communication that provides value and connection.
